“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8)
Jesus expects us to make a difference in our world by our loving, witnessing lives, our powerful praying, and our demonstration of his power and authority. Being filled with the Spirit’s power is not an optional luxury. It is vital if you and I are going to represent him. But we can only be effective witnesses if we are first cleansed and made holy and then filled and anointed with the power of the Holy Spirit to be all he wants us to be The power of the Spirit is first of all the power to live a holy life, to be victorious in temptation and to daily manifest the fruit of the Spirit. The love of a cleansed, holy heart is patient, is kind, does not envy, does not boast, is not proud. It is not rude, is not self- seeking. Sanctified love is not provoked, keeps no record of wrongs, does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. Holy love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. It never fails. (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).
The power of the Spirit is what keeps us holy and loving in all our reactions, relationships and emotions. There is no greater testimony to the reality of being cleansed from all sin and filled with the Holy Spirit than when other people see nothing but pure love in our reactions and when we experience nothing but pure loving sweetness in our inmost nature. (Wesley Duewel).
--Wesley Duewel, paraphrased by Neville Bartle, New Zealand
“Lord, fill us with the Holy Spirit so that all of us can be living, walking examples of the Spirit-filled life.”
