Week 22: Pray for Children and Youth in our Churches to Hear and Respond to God’s Call

“’Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.’ ‘Alas, Sovereign Lord,’ I said, ‘I do not know how to speak; I am too young.’ But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.’” ~Jeremiah 1:5-7

Although the ocean does not decide for itself where it wants to go, we are given the freedom of choice. Our lives are made up of choices, minute by minute, day by day.

Jeremiah 1:6-18 records Jeremiah’s call, and invites me to imagine what that might have been like. I assume Jeremiah must have been young when God called him to be a prophet to the nation Israel. God told him “I set you apart and appointed you before you were in the womb to be a prophet to the nations.” How would I respond if from the moment I was able to speak, someone told me the job I would do for the rest of my life? Despite Jeremiah’s hesitant response that, “I am too young, I couldn’t possibly speak as a prophet,” God answers with a list of promises:

-I am with you -I will rescue you -I have put my words in your mouth -I have appointed you over nations and kingdoms -You are a fortified city -They will fight against you but will not overcome you

And Jeremiah chose to say yes!

Jeremiah was an ordinary boy who became a man whose very words were from God and used by God! God used Jeremiah simply because he chose to say yes to God’s call.

Prayer: Father God, sometimes I feel hesitant to trust Your call because I know I cannot do what You are asking. But You don’t ask me to do it in my own strength. You promise Your Holy Spirit to empower me so I can fulfill Your call, to follow Your will no matter what the cost. Help me to release my desire to control the outcomes. Help me to trust Your promises. I depend on You. And because Your Spirit fills and empowers me, I say YES!
